Indonesian youth crew unit Greedy Youth dropped their debut EP, Spartan Journey, during the third quarter of 2024. After releasing the title track in 2022, the full release was unveiled in partnership with Meta Klab, a DIY show organizer in Cipanas, West Java. Boasting influences like Mindset, Get The Most, and Battery, the band really nails the sound in a way that’s nostalgic and refreshing for fans of the genre. Channeling positivity into all that they do, these students of the game prove that they’ve got the sound, the spirit, and attitude to carry the torch to their part of the globe and beyond.

Spartan Journey begins with the straight forward “Intro”—octave runs, floor toms, rinse and repeat. Straight into “It’s Our Decide”, a quick youth crew jam complete with fast beats, unforgettable chorus lyrics, and a fist pumping breakdown. Followed by “Gun on Your Head”, a melodic two-stepper, with a “flex your head” lyrical motif. The title track, “Spartan Journey”, is far and away the best track on the release. It’s the perfect hardcore track under a minute and a half and accomplishes everything it sets out to do—a song truly worthy to title the release.

Closing out the EP are “Get Up Fast” and “Trust For What”. The former calls on the listener to find inner strength to pick themselves up when they fall. This one probably has the hardest build up and breakdown combo on the record. The latter is an updated take on the classic “stabbed in the back” style crew song. Whereas tradition would have it that the song’s subject is dead to the lyricist, Greedy Youth buck tradition by calling on the subject to change their behavior and be held accountable to change their ways. Naming a commitment to accountability makes scenes safer and promotes real unity much more so than burning bridges entirely. Great lyrical reflections on this last song.

While Indonesia might be on the other side of the world from where youth crew is most popular in North America, Greedy Youth have taken their vision and reverence for the genre to present us with something worthwhile and important.
