15 Current DIY Punk Bands from Poland to Check Out and Follow (Vol. 2)

Sanctus Propaganda's Wojtek shares the second part of his selection of bands from Poland that deserve wider recognition outside the country.

Welcome back to what we once called a “scene report”. We don’t like reading reports these days. The word sounds too scary and uninviting to begin with, so instead we look at photos while listening to music and skimming blurbs. And that is what this series is about.

When I wrote the first part a few months ago, the cruel editor-in-chief of this widely read site said it was too long, leaving me with a handful of paragraphs unpublished. So “Volume 2” of this selection was inevitable.

Without further ado, here are 15 more bands from Poland that I think are worth following. I made sure that they are musically varied and carry the message! So here we go, in alphabetical order.

1 Hańba

Hańba

Punk rock was created in the 1930s and played in the streets by brass bands. Really? Well, maybe. This is Hańba. D-beat punk turned into folk punk with banjo, accordion, pulsing tuba and percussion. Did you expect this? Travel back in time, learn about history, poetry and street life in pre-war and wartime. Probably one of the most amazing punk bands you will ever hear! Check out their releases on Antena Krzyku, a legendary Polish label.

2 Jad

Jad

Jad were the first to fill the void left by Siekiera decades ago, and now they get all the credit. With two albums and an EP to their credit, as well as a US tour and numerous gigs in Poland and Europe, they might just be THE Polish band you know and love. Jad are not discovering America, they are just making it more bearable. And as for Siekiera and their primitive sound and sometimes horrible recording quality, this is what Jad do. They make it sound proper and very appealing, not horrible.

3 Kathaa

Kathaa

Kathaa might hold a world record for releasing a debut album on their 10th anniversary. Laziness you might say, but fortunately not anymore. The band is now playing gigs and we get the chance to hear their epic concept album live. Kathaa explores lands beyond Neurosis territory and goes its own way. A brilliant band for your sleepless nights. Their CD is still available at Sanctus Propaganda (with a bonus track) and the vinyl version is available at DIY Koło Records.

4 Møld

Møld

Made up of members from some well known bands, Møld are able to satisfy the tastes of any faddy listener and any refined ear. Their power-violent hardcore takes no prisoners. Fast, furious and with a dash of humor. Plus a Black Sabbath cover to make you want more. Their debut EP is about to be released on NIC Records and they have just started touring. You must hear and see them!

5 Moron’s Morons

Moron’s Morons

It’s all about sideburns, sunglasses and mustaches. Moron’s Morons play garage punk that pays tribute to the sound of ’60s rock’n’roll and ’70s punk rock. They have all the ingredients to make you dance the night away. They will turn your gig into a wild party!

6 Necrosodomistical Slaughter

Necrosodomistical Slaughter

Looks like grindcore punk returned for good and Necrosodomistical Slaughter are a living proof. I don’t know about you but I only like my grind core on punk chassis. And this is it. Not a new band from central Poland but they had a break in releasing records and their newest CD is out now on Hiddden Beauty Records. And it’s a banger with 16, usually short, songs and dual vocals. Plus, there is a word “slaughter” in their name, which is solid recommendation already.

7 Negative Impact

Negative Impact

8-piece boy band with 5 vocalists, all present on stage, which is quite a spectacle. Negative Impact consists of members of some more or less known bands from Poland and plays old school fast hardcore. Very energetic. There is this typical NYHC and Boston hardcore vibe to their songs, which are sung in English and are very sing-along. The LP is already out on Enigmatic Records.

8 Nonsanto

Nonsanto

More grindcore punk anyone? In my humble opinion Nonsanto are the best of the genre right now. One minute songs, speed and the obvious tempo changes, varied vocals, fantastic production and already two LPs on account: Enslaved By The Grind and the recently released Human Condition. This is grind core with a message and a real snare drum sound if you ask me! I’ve seen their setlist for gigs, it’s way longer than an A4 sheet. A few dozen songs, played non-stop without looking at each other. This is what happens when you rehearse three times a week! They are a fucking mincing machine!

9 Poison Heart

Poison Heart

All hail Rock’n’Roll. Poison Heart from Warsaw take a handful of the best of the genre and do it brilliantly! Proper guitar sound, spot-on solos, great vocals, perfect English and memorable choruses. New Your Dolls come to mind!

10 Sanity Control

Sanity Control

Experienced musicians are involved in the making of this project, but it’s the result that counts. And it is phenomenal. If you are thirsty for old school crossover where punk beats meet thrash guitar and lyrics deliver a message, look no further. Sanity Control are a very strong addition to the already strong Warsaw scene.

11 Schrottersburg

Schrottersburg

Schrottersburg are not a young band, in fact their first release came out 10 years ago, but I decided to include them here because they have gone through quite a few changes in their music and instrumentation. The band has evolved from a three-piece post-punk to a four-piece industrial krautrock ensemble, making good use of percussion, steel barrels, and more, taking you on a journey through quite a few folk sounds. Definitely a band worth checking out and seeing live.

12 Skorup/a

Skorup/a

Skorup/a, which simply means Crus/t deliver what is promised. Fast crust punk with socio-political lyrics. Great bass sound, perfect timing and a lot of fun live. And having seen them several times, I can say that Skorup/a are a lot of fun live and dare I say it, sound better and more energetic than on their two LPs. The band has just changed the singer, so expect a different sound with a woman screaming while we wait for the new recordings. A voice you might remember from bands like Dyym or Mind Pollution.

13 Surowica

Surowica

Surowica blend romantic crust with d-beat and the result is more than pleasing. They choose not to stick to the usual coarse crust only, but embellish their music with slower, inspirational and atmospheric sounds. Their debut CD is out now on DIY Koło and Silesian Blood Records, so find out for yourself.

14 Titanic Sea Moon

Titanic Sea Moon

If you’re familiar with the ’90s noise-rock of Ewa Braun, here’s the 3/4 of them in their new creation. Titanic Sea Moon take up the mantle of Ewa Braun and go beyond the path they once took. They still move through the sea of noise-rock, where the last word prevails over the other. They are not afraid to play their riffs over and over again to make room for toms or guitar notes. Definitely for those who have time to dive into new sounds and depths. With two records already on Fonoradar, they can be seen all over the country and hopefully the continent.

15 Wara

Wara

Formed not long ago, underwent some line-up changes and managed to release a live album that beautifully translates the energy Wara shares on stage. Angry vocals, angry lyrics and angry anarcho-punk enriched by more anger coming from the trumpet. A nail in the coffin of all bigots. Finally they are available for gigs with a solid line-up!
