Post-hardcore music has been a realm of unapologetic intensity and emotion, and Edmonton, Canada’s Midnight Peg deliver just that with their 2022 release, Horn Colic. The eight-track album is a concise and impactful journey into the depths of the genre, leaving no room for complacency.

It took me way too long to pen this review. At least in the meantime I was able to listen to this release well over 20 times. To cut a long story short, it fucking slaps.

Here’s why (the short version):

  1. There’s some sweet songwriting in here.
  2. The production is on point.
  3. The lyrics are fucking meaningful.
  4. It sounds familiar, yet it’s fresh. You can totally squeeze this record in between G.L.O.S.S and Bikini Kill, but it’s definitely Midnight Peg.

Now the longer version.

The album kicks off with a bang, and “Gâchis de Feet” immediately sets the tone for what’s to come. The frenetic drumming and aggressive guitar riffs create a chaotic yet strangely melodic atmosphere. The dynamic shifts keep the listener engaged and showcase the band’s instrumental prowess.

“Haute Suture” comes next and doesn’t waste a second. With a relentless tempo and intense vocals, “Haute Suture” grabs your attention and refuses to let go.

“Drain” takes a more measured approach, allowing the lyrics to shine through. The emotionally charged vocals are complemented by a haunting guitar melody, giving the song a beautifully cursed quality.

The title track is a whirlwind of sonic aggression. Its thunderous drumming and fierce guitar work create an atmosphere of controlled chaos. The vocals veer between fierce growls and plaintive melodies, creating a captivating contrast.

“Callous Callus” introduces a slower tempo but maintains a heavy and brooding atmosphere. The lyrics explore themes of pain and resilience, delivering a powerful message amidst the sonic onslaught.

“Maculate Conception” quickly escalates into a whirlwind of distorted guitars and impassioned vocals. The band’s ability to seamlessly shift dynamics definitely kept me engaged.

Clocking in at just under two minutes, “Turn Victim” is a sonic assault that doesn’t overstay its welcome. The aggressive instrumentation and passionate delivery make it a standout moment on the album.

Closing out the album, “Head Tick” is a powerful finale, demonstrating Midnight Peg’s ability to blend melody with chaos, creating a genuine blasting experience. The track’s extended runtime allows for a more intricate exploration of their sound.

Horn Colic by Midnight Peg is a relentless journey through the darker corners of modern day post-hardcore clashing with strong riot grrrl vibes. The band’s musicianship and emotional depth shine throughout, making for an album that’s both intense and cathartic. While the tracks are relatively short, they pack a punch and leave a lasting impression.
