When I woke up this morning I was in the mood for some mosh-worthy primitive hardcore, and my first instinct was to put on that new Illiterates record, which I guess is a top contender for many year-end lists. But the world of hardcore punk is full of underrated troglodytes who do this style even angrier. One such band is Lower Minds from Georgia (the birthplace of Joseph Stalin, not the southeastern US state). They dropped a three-song tour demo back in October 2024 that I completely missed, but they’ve returned with World Is Collapsing in February 2025, which includes those three tracks re-recorded and sounding tenfold better, plus seven new ones (including instrumental intro and outro) to complete the cave painting.

The record opens with an absolutely textbook intro. The one that’s bound to get bodies moshing side-to-side in a live setting before a single word is grunted. And then it barrels straight into “Inside a Bubble,” where the vocals drop like a boulder. These are full neanderthal growls, none of that Youth of Today-style, Tarzan-like screaming (yes, another Illiterates reference). Lower Minds are gruffer-than-gruff, like a stone axe swung with both hands.

Everything here clocks in around a minute, and that’s all they need to bludgeon you into submission. It’s stomping hardcore punk in the Negative Approach lineage—they don’t rely purely on speed, and it’s not mosh-core either. “Feast During the Plague” might be the best track here. It’s got a creepy crawl mosh part that sounds like dragging your kill back to the cave. There are other essential bone-crusher moments in tracks like “Clinical Research” and “Pointless Existence,” but it never feels like they’re aiming for the breakdowns. As I said, it’s all primal instinct aggro, not some gym-bro flexing.

Production-wise, this is way ahead of the 2024 demo. Still recorded live in the basement of Secret Place—Tbilisi’s vegan bar and DIY venue where most local gigs happen—but this time the songs are mixed by Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory. Husayn’s fingerprints give it that perfect stomping feel, and I’d say it gives me some NWOBHC flashbacks. Think The Flex, Arms Race, early Chisel, but Lower Minds sound more like cave-dwellers than British hardcore skinheads.

World Is Collapsing is a pure, grunting, stomping slab of hardcore that lurches forward like some mammoth made of amp fuzz and sweat. Based on the live videos, they play 15–17 minute sets, which, fight me, is the perfect set length for a hardcore band. If you like it, check out other Georgian bands like Sick Fucks, Funeral Mess, and Self Prison.
