Estinzione – Self-Titled

Bologna's grindcore pack delivers a powerful debut that blends old-school influences with diverse, socially conscious lyrics atop impressive musical versatility.

The grindcore scene in Italy has always been notably strong and politically militant, featuring classic acts like Comrades, Neid, Repulsione, and many others. Today, we introduce a promising new band from Bologna, comprised of seasoned veterans from groups such as Rising Hate, Glances, Reverie, Klam, and others. Formed in March 2023, this grind quintet has spent the past year rehearsing intensely and released their self-titled debut on May 3, 2024.

Recorded at Buzz Farm Recording Studio and tightly mixed by their vocalist Luca, the album features 15 tracks brimming with powerful anti-systemic rage and disgust. The music incorporates a range of influences, from gnarly crust punk and raw d-beat to powerviolence and extreme metal.

While the sound may be old-school, the diverse musical backgrounds of the band members shine throughout the album. Estinzione skillfully blends elements from various extreme punk and metal subgenres, nostalgically evoking classic grindcore bands like Extreme Noise Terror, Agathocles, Assück, and others, ultimately creating their own and distinct sound. Luca demonstrates an impressive vocal range with ear-shattering low growls and piercing shrieks, a hallmark of the genre that few can achieve so effortlessly. The spoken word parts add an interesting layer, making the record darker and more atmospheric, matching the gritty lyrical themes.

The guitar arrangements are varied, ranging from fast-paced crustgrind riffs reminiscent of Disrupt or Destroy! to crushing grindnoise sections, with frequent tempo changes and slower sludgy parts. This demonstrates the technical and compositional versatility of their guitarist. The rhythm section, featuring buzzing distorted bass lines and impeccably timed drumming, provides a strong backbone for the music.

Lyrically, the band tackles a wide array of topics, refreshing for a grindcore band. They explore introspective themes about the struggle to feel free and creative in a world constrained by late-stage capitalism, with its commodification of everything and the resulting deterioration of public mental health. These well-written lyrics convey a sense of vicious hatred towards the establishment and a desire to protest and insurrect. There’s also a prevalent dystopian and nihilistic tone, poetically depicting the psychological suffocation of postmodern man under the ruling order and its mechanisms serving the rich and powerful. This pervasive state of nausea and despondency is expressed in a Kafkaesque manner in the darker songs, while angst-filled anthems of detestation towards institutional and hierarchical systems provide a balance. The articulate lyrics complement the dark brutality of the music perfectly, reflecting the band’s understanding of modern social theory and leftist writing.

This debut is a strong start for Estinzione, showcasing their dedication and hard work. We eagerly await their musical progression and future releases. Support the band through their official Bandcamp page—if you enjoy classic, socially conscious grindcore with a unique twist, you won’t be disappointed.
