Top 10 Punk Records of 2025 with Andy Lefton

That time of year again, Andy’s ten favorite underdog punk records, with bangers from Axon, Poise, No Victim, Ultimate Disaster, and more.

The year was full of incredible music from all spectrums of punk, hardcore and everything adjacent but trying to catch up with all of it was nearly impossible. It goes without saying that our culture of music and resistance had a lot of inspiration from the world at large and knowing we’re that much closer to end times makes our movement that much more important.

I recall some years back when things felt a bit stagnant and I’m sure many of you will agree, but as of late it’s been a surreal moment of constant punk being churned out daily. I think for a lot of us (do I dare say “older”) punks, we’ve seen the world of punk rock evolve and devolve over the years, but I think it goes without saying that our current global environment of cruelty and division has strengthened our urge to scream louder than we ever have.

This list is a very small chunk of a much larger iceberg, and I wish I had the time to name off everything, but unfortunately that’s not the name of the game. With that, I send out my heartfelt gratitude to all those involved in the music and care enough to give some life to our small community. Up the punks.

1 Axon – S/T EP

Axon – S/T EP

Axon brings us four tracks of blistering d-beat, much in the vein of US bands like Destruct, Physique, and even a touch of Japanese crasher goodness. I will say that there’s a sense of early USHC that gives this the chef’s kiss, and it’s one of the reasons this really stuck out for me. The release is sheer brutality with non-stop energy, and I would expect nothing less from punks of this nature. This is excellent, get on it!

2 Coronary – M.A.D.ness

Coronary – M.A.D.ness

If Chicago has done anything right, it has given us a swath of excellent hardcore and punk throughout the ages. Coronary is no exception, as these guys tear into the hardcore punk scene like a bat out of hell with an uncompromising barrage of rage-infused tracks and no let-up. Twelve tracks of straight-to-the-point hardcore punk. You’d be a fool not to check them out, highly recommended!

3 Poise – S/T EP

Poise – S/T EP

For me, this was one of the best releases of 2025. The overall vibe that these five tracks deliver is merciless and falls into a rank of its own. Politically driven, with riffs that are fucking excellent and give us enough noise to make out what’s being played, while the vocals have just the right amount of distortion to blend everything perfectly. Each track is anthemic, with a well-thought-out approach to vocal structure. It’s simply an excellent fucking release.

4 Tetem – Egy másik világ polka

Tetem – Egy másik világ polka

Fantastic crust punk from Hungary that knocks us into a stampede of raised fists, mania, and a surge of adrenaline I haven’t felt in music like this for ages. This isn’t your quintessential “crust” band, as you get elements of Tragedy or Martyrdöd, but the music overall is simply excellent, with killer melodies while the vocals tear through the beautifully executed song structures. This band needs WAY more recognition, and if melodic “neo” crust is your thing, get on it… and if it’s not, it will be after you hear this.

5 Pill Mill – Demo 2025

Pill Mill – Demo 2025

This demo from British Columbia proves that the sounds of early hardcore are alive and well, and that brings a very big smile to my face. These guys deliver three tracks of early USHC style, i.e. Jerry’s Kids, Kraut, and Articles of Faith, and I feel this is a sound that needs to continue through our underground, as it’s the foundation of everything we love in punk and hardcore.

6 Gype – S/T

Gype – S/T

This outstanding release comes from the bowels of Aberdeen, UK which gives us a tasty treat of blistering hardcore punk that starts out at a hundred MPH and ends at a hundred MPH. This release has loads of energy that is reminiscent of bands like Bring to Ruin, Substandard, Et al. The constant barrage of sonic rage sends a pulverizing sense of angst that never lets up, and reinforces how proper punk is played. Gype is a very good band, check it out!

7 No Victim – S/T

No Victim – S/T

Another blistering punk release from Sex Fiend Abomination Records that’s worth every penny. This is a classic release, and what I mean is that No Victim has the energy and sound of brilliant bands of yesteryear like 7 Seconds, The Freeze, etc. Fantastic hardcore that delivers that primal sound of punk, not only in the production but also in the music itself. It’s an excellent release and makes me appreciate how music of this nature was given to us on a bloody and bruised platter. I love this, and so should you.

8 Mind Harvester / Natural Abuse – Split LP

Mind Harvester / Natural Abuse – Split LP

This release hits close to home, as these two bands are our state neighbors and, in all transparency, good friends. Regardless, both bands have come together to give us something that’s fucking excellent. First off, Mind Harvester hail from the frigid northlands of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and give us a heavy dose of blazing hardcore punk that reminds me of some of the most prolific sounds of the ’90s, like Skitsystem, Tragedy, and more. Natural Abuse come from my birth city of Chicago, Illinois, and I am so thankful to hear manic d-beat sounds like this coming from that area. Natural Abuse nail down the d-beat mangel, but this isn’t what you’d expect. It’s hard as fuck, with a nice twist of creativity in the writing. It’s heavy, intense, and beautifully written, something many other bands of this kind should take notes on. In this day and age of overly saturated sounds, it takes a lot for a release to floor me, but this one has certainly done that.

9 Ultimate Disaster – For Progress…

Ultimate Disaster – For Progress…

For fans of all things d-beat, this is your ticket. From the old-school vault comes a sound we’re familiar with, but with a nice dose of mangel mayhem we’ve grown to love so much. If Excrement of War, Disclose, and shall I even say… Discharge (I mean, c’mon, this is where the “D” comes from in d-beat) is your thing, you’ll absolutely love this. A nice addition to the swath of monochromatic punk albums we all have in our collection. This is one for the ages.

10 Tengoku – S/T

Tengoku – S/T

This has been at the top of my list since it was announced, and I simply can’t get enough of it! One of the best Japanese punk releases in some years and I really hope they do a vinyl or even an online digital release as you can only find it on CD (with DVD cover). They only made 500 and are difficult to come by. If high-energy, hard rockin’ punk is your thing, you are going to absolutely love this! The riffage alone is fucking excellent along with the barrage of manic gang vocal delivery. If Acute or Mustang is your jam, you need to find this!
