Unconventional & Enigmatic: Exploring No Sanctuary’s New Album ‘Metafísica Popular Portátil’ (Premiere)

Basque band No Sanctuary's new album Metafísica Popular Portátil creates a punk alchemy of the highest order—transforming well-worn punk and post-punk tropes into brilliant work of outsider art.

Hailing from the centuries-old city of Iruña (Pamplona) in 2014, No Sanctuary have summoned their sonic sorcery to create an album that transcends the conventional boundaries.

Like seekers guided by arcane forces, their path is one of protest, noise, and stubborn devotion, drawing inspiration from luminaries such as Killing Joke, Rudimentary Peni, Saint Vitus, Christian Death, Today Is The Day, Swans, Psychic TV, Reverend Bizarre, Akauzazte, Contropotere, Antisect, and, of course, Amebix (if the band name doesn’t make it clear). It is in this punk alchemy that No Sanctuary forge their distinct musical identity.

No Sanctuary’s self-titled debut from 2015 and the aptly titled Weird Slow Pvnk of Mystery and Imagination from 2019 both solidified their intentions (not counting the full-bore experimental two-track EP from 2020), offering a collection of tracks and themes that traversed the eerie works of John Carpenter, the industrial history of Bizkaia, the mystical realms of the Galician Otherworld, and the cryptic tales woven by Clark Ashton Smith. Consisting of five long tracks ranging from five to almost fifteen minutes in length, No Sanctuary’s latest DIY release, Metafísica Popular Portátil, taps into the vast reservoir of musical genres and lyrical meanderings, creating another kaleidoscope that defies easy categorization.

Their artistic prism draws inspiration from a variety of sources, from the raw energies of crust and sludge, to the classic sound of anarcho-punk. Descending further into the depths, one encounters the mesmerizing allure of doom metal, its repetitive riffs and weighty atmospheres casting a hypnotic spell. Drifting into shadowed territories, the dark and seedy vibes of post-punk, goth, death rock and industrial landscapes weave together, adding a layer of enigmatic allure. Each composition resonates with a distinct essence, evoking a myriad of emotions within the listener’s realm. However, amidst the multifarious interplay of sounds and influences, there are those whose interpretations veer astray, their dissonant echoes akin to the fragmented ramblings of a misguided seer.

The album opens with “Godstar”, a nod to the absolute cult that was Psychic TV, setting the stage for a transcendental sonic experience. While exploring new territories, No Sanctuary remain rooted in their hardcore punk origins, unleashing a torrent of aural savagery in “Central Zero”. This blistering stenchcore anthem casts a potent spell—’Hex the system down and feast upon its ruins!’—empowering listeners to defy authority and build a new world from the ground up. “Ballad of Boots and Bats” emerges from the shadows, weaving a nocturnal tale where skinheads and goths unite amidst the company of the undead. Pulsating with the rhythmic echoes inherited from Killing Joke, this track infuses the album with an infectious energy.

Continuing their mythological and industrial odyssey from previous works, “Acería Compacta de Bizkaia” adds another captivating chapter to No Sanctuary’s narrative. Like a spectral guide through steel-laden landscapes, the doom-laden track carries echoes of their previous masterpiece, “Altos Hornos de Vizcaya”, igniting a lush trove of emotions and imagery in their native Basque language.

As the ethereal echoes of “Cénit // Defensa Interior”—reminiscent of Galician folk band Sangre de Muerdago—intertwine with anarchist ideals and the wild spirits of untamed mountains, the album concludes with a sense of heartfelt connection, drawing the hearer into the inner sanctum of No Sanctuary’s sonic realm. Within this expansive framework, No Sanctuary weave intricate layers of folklore, spoken word samples, and host of nerdy references, creating a complete story for the eclectic souls, the weirdos, and the maniacs who revel in the unconventional. Metafísica is a testament to the band’s ability to create a diverse yet complete album that invites us to immerse into the depths of its cathartic soundscapes.

Metafísica Popular Portátil works with the raw materials of punk and some of its more experimental derivatives, but encapsulates a profound essence—an intensity that transcends the mundane, an anarchic esotericism that dances with shades of gray psychedelia, a touch of whimsical humor, and an unwavering struggle for a life imbued with meaning. No Sanctuary is the embodiment of the weird, an enigmatic entity that merges mystery and imagination into an auditory spellbinding experience. Now surrender to the journey and let the metaphysics guide you on this weird DIY punk pilgrimage.🦇
