Deceso Por Causa Desconocida is a hardcore band formed by young punks from Santiago, Chile. Some of them used to play in the deathrock/hardcore band El Antagonista. This new band has the raw sound that’s becoming a classic in all Tobi Records releases. Shall we give them a listen?
“Segunda Muerte” (Second Death) is the opener, which encapsulates the whole band in 2:12 (and has a really cool video, too). Echoing voices, distorted guitars, choruses and dark melodies. Although still in touch with the gothic sound of “El Antagonist”, this band moves more towards the music of the Japanese harcore scene with bands like Zouo, Balzac and Kuro. It’s heavier and more to the point. Direct. Uncompromising. In the second track, “Manuales de Tortura” (Torture Manual), the guitars sound melted, like a web of sound pouring out, but it doesn’t lose its rawness.
Politics, religion and death are the lyrical themes that emerge in these songs. And even if you don’t understand Spanish, you can hear it in the melodies, in the way they approach the composition of the songs. The sonic aesthetic of the band is really well thought out, and that’s something that not many people do down here in South America. They are also cool to see live. If all the punk you’ve been listening to lately is from hardcore jocks, dirty crust punks, or tough guys who don’t know where they stand, this might be a breath of fresh air.
