Contact:

I'm doing an episode of my radio show with a space theme since it's space week soon in Ireland.
What have you got so far, I hear you ask (well no I don't really but I want to post about it).

B-52s - Planet Claire

B-52s - 52 Miles West of Venus

Sun Ra Arkestra - Space Is The Place

Riff Raff - Cosmonaut

Telefís - Space Is Us

Post Punk Podge - U.F.O.L.F.O

As you might notice, there's a lack of loud/noisy music there. I'm sure it's out there, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank. Anyone got any suggestions? I played the Rezillos and Spizzenergi the last time I did a space-themed episode.

I'm also planning on doing a reading from an article by the Association of Autonomous Astronauts.

That's a really interesting topic for me, as I'm a big fan of sci-fi. Unfortunately, there aren't many punk bands with similar themes that stand out. I think it's more prevalent in the metal and experimental/ambient scenes.

I think you should include "Books About UFOs" by Hüsker Dü.

One of my favorites is Ahulabrum, it's a solo experimental lo-fi black metal with EVP/field recordings, noise, and lyrics about UFOs and close encounters with extraterrestrials. The compilation of Ahulabrum's early EPs is brilliantly called John Keel Sessions, a pun on BBC's John Peel Sessions and the US ufologist John Keel.

Zebulon Kosted's Taken to the Stars is a psychedelic black metal about being abducted by aliens.

In the death metal scene, you have Blood Incantation, which is an absolutely amazing band who sing about sci-fi themes and humanity's DNA being planted by alien civilizations, though as people, they stay away from any conspiracy theories.

Archivist was a post- Fall of Efrafa and Light Bearer band led by Alex CF, who released a sci-fi themed trilogy of post-metal and blackgaze between 2015 and 2019, and all three albums are amazing.

Dechmont Woods is a New York-based music project entirely inspired by the 1979 UFO incident in Livingston, Scotland. The album features skits from TV reports and documentaries mixed with folk, drone, ambient, and disturbing noise soundscapes.

I think it's also worth mentioning some really good bands inspired by Ursula LeGuin and her novels from the The Hainish Cycle.

Ekumen: chaotic hardcore/post-hardcore from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Left Hand of Darkness: blackened hardcore/neocrust from Umeå, Sweden.

Let us make symphonies of our grief, and of our coffins, battering rams.
