The Rope – Nightbird
The Rope's latest release is a gothic masterpiece that balances dark post-punk elegance with haunting intensity, the perfect soundtrack for today's uncertain times.
There is nothing more inviting than the perfect gothic album. There are many bands that have proudly held that title throughout the ages, and 2024 just delivered the pinnacle of the genre. The Rope are a Minneapolis based quartet that have a long standing for producing some of the best goth post-punk in the Midwest and this latest onslaught of dark elegance is a testament to the beautiful bleak world of the genre.
If you’re not familiar with The Rope, it’s time for you to become acquainted with the haunting intensity of these beautifully orchestrated rockers. I was first introduced to The Rope many years ago while strolling online for new local sounds and came across their video of “Water to Wine”, which completely floored me that this was locally produced.
The beauty in Jesse’s voice brings me back to the time of the Psychedelic Furs, Sisters of Mercy and even Killing Joke. The music itself transports you back to an era where the world was dancing on the ashes of oblivion. During the ’80s we had the global threat of the Reagan/Thatcher regime, and while the world stared into the abyss of catastrophe, we were able to escape to an underworld of camaraderie and solidarity as the world burned around us.
With punk, we had the idea of revolution and taking back what rightfully belonged to us and strive to live another day in a world of death and ash. It was the sounds of post-punk and goth that gave us freedom to dance on the crumbled foundation of that time. Now, we’re back to an era of grim uncertainty and divisiveness. Thankfully we have the brilliant minds and musical prowess of The Rope to bind us back together and give us the means to dance in a world that’s weakened by a strong voice.
The Rope give us a dark and blissful allure, a cacophony of vast euphony that let us dance during a time when we need it most. The craftsmanship that The Rope deliver is beyond any expectations and is musically inline with the masters of yore that have graced our ears over the many decades this genre has created for us.
For anyone that loves the recent post-punk sounds of Twin Tribes, Home Front, Litovsk or even some more nostalgic sounds of Southern Death Cult and Killing Joke, The Rope is an absolute necessity for your collection.
