Hailing from Oslo, Norway, powerviolence duo TÆL are a distinctive project creating ear-bleeding noise without guitars, following in the footsteps of legends like Suppression and Godstomper. Drum and bass grindviolence has always been a soft spot of mine, and while few bands manage to do it convincingly, TÆL clearly have their own approach, making an immediate impact with their debut self-titled album after a very promising demo.
The record was released on August 31, 2023, first on cassette by the band themselves and later on LP through a number of influential grindcore and powerviolence labels. It breaks stereotypes and presents a fresh, sludgy take on powerviolence, firmly rooted in the genre’s core traditions. Recorded at Endless Tinnitus by Kenneth and mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios, the album sounds modern and compact while fully preserving the old-school aesthetics that define the genre. Remaining true to DIY ethics and sonic brutality, TÆL deliver a contemporary mix of grindcore, sludge, and powerviolence that positions them among the most compelling bands currently active in the Scandinavian scene.
TÆL continue the extreme direction introduced on their 2022 demo, sharpening the slow and fast contrasts that define their sound. The bass riffs radiate sheer brutality and erupt naturally into fast-paced grindcore storms of buzzing ferocity. In contrast, the slower passages and breakdowns, driven by the groovy and punishing drum performance, generate a constant sense of tension and friction. The result feels like a relentless clash between chaos and darkness, frequently interrupted by samples and noise interludes. The sixteen tracks pass in a blur, leaving behind a charged atmosphere and a lasting sense of impact rather than exhaustion.
The vocals channel pain and anger in equal measure, shifting between barbaric outbursts and piercing, uncomfortable highs. Comparisons to Crossed Out, No Comment, Agents of Satan, and especially Godstomper are inevitable, yet TÆL avoid sounding derivative. This is modern grind-infused powerviolence at its most focused and inspired, fueled by rage at the contemporary world and its many injustices. The lyrics dwell on darkness, misanthropy, abandonment, and isolation, emotions that actively drive the album’s hostile and oppressive atmosphere.
A modern banger, TÆL’s LP embodies what DIY powerviolence should strive for. Originality, clarity of intent, and precisely directed fury sit at its core, alongside a genuine commitment to do-it-yourself traditions and resistance. Influences are present but reshaped into something unmistakably their own.
