SOULCRAFT hail from Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan, and have been active since at least 2000, though they somehow flew under my radar until this release. That oversight ends here because this record is an absolute powerhouse.

Blending hardcore punk styles with a precision that feels both natural and electrifying, SOULCRAFT deliver a 50/50 fusion of traditional Japanese hardcore (think Bastard, Death Side, and Crow) with the fast, crusty hardcore energy familiar from top-tier American bands. End result? A sound that stands out as both fresh and steeped in the finest hardcore punk tradition.

Their music is a blistering mix of raging crust hardcore layered with phenomenal burning spirits-style vocals sung entirely in Japanese. The whaling guitars add a melodic edge, while the heavy metal guitar solos inject that signature Japanese flair for over-the-top brilliance. The Gastunk cover included here is nothing short of fantastic and feels like a fitting homage while still showcasing SOULCRAFT’s unique take.

Originally released on vinyl by Putrid Filth Conspiracy, the album was later reissued on CD by Bloodsucker Records with alternate artwork and a bonus track. For anyone obsessed with the Burning Spirits genre or just seeking a standout band from Japan’s legendary hardcore scene, SOULCRAFT is an absolute must-listen. Please don’t sleep on this one!
