Χωρίς Οίκτο (Horis Ikto) formed around 2015 in Athens, Greece. If you’re accustomed to the contemporary Greek DIY scene, you’ll notice that these guys are actually all hardcore punk lifers coming from bands such as Antimob, Sarabante, Cut Off and Παροξυσμός (Paroksysmos).
The five tracks on “Εύκολη λεία” 7″ were recorded in May 2018 and will hit you in the chest, then drag you straight into the streets of Athens. These are usually dirty and noisy places, where, beyond the rich ancient history, lie the stories of ordinary people in flesh and blood whose individual lives have been shaped by unique cultural circumstances and a rising tide of social unrest between classes.
Herein resides the untamed spirit of resistance in the neighborhood of Exarcheia and a strong DIY scene with bands like Horis Ikto bound to deliver a straight up, needle-sharp street rock with the tilt and throttle of the classic-sounding punk and hardcore from the heydays of the movement. Aimed at catchy and anthemic songs, I can hear influences from various schools of punk-rock, including such from Japanese bands like Crude and their outstanding 1999’s “Attitude” LP.
What I like the most in the majority of Greek bands though, is that they have their own distinguish style ever since the early 1980s. Horis Ikto is also a band with their own signature, progressing past the standard musical aesthetics of hardcore punk. There are a lot of hooks on this record and it certainly deserves your attention. If you have an interest in the Greek hardcore punk scene, this 7″ is one of my highlights of 2018.
