Discröpsy, a talented up-and-coming crustgrind band from the provincial Brazilian city of Amparo, is comprised of two mysterious members: a drummer and a guitarist who also handles vocals. They’ve opted for anonymity online, which makes sense given their militant political messages and the style of music they play.

These Brazilian crust grinders have already played on numerous local festivals with similar bands and seem to be getting some traction lately. Their debut EP, …e por dento…Podre!!!, released digitally on June 29, 2022, is impressively well-done, especially considering it’s their first. The mix and mastering are top-notch, a notable achievement for a band committed to DIY standards and a fiercely underground and political stance.

The EP contains seven excellently composed songs. The lyrical themes are typical for crust/grind—ranging from harsh critiques of Big Pharma to anarchist dissections of bourgeois mentality, and calls for insurrectional protest methods. There’s also a touch of nihilistic despair, especially in the last song “Nunca Melhora” (“It never gets better”). This track echoes Mark Fisher’s theory of capitalist realism, highlighting the struggle to envision the end of capitalism and its impact on mental health in exploited populations. Discröpsy, like other Brazilian grind/mince/noise bands such as Estorvo Sonoro, Kebranti, Escabroso, and many others, convey the unapologetically strong spirit of a historically oppressed country like Brazil, plagued for centuries by colonialism, racism, cultural subjugation and white supremacy. This EP encapsulates their fierce sonic protest against these injustices.

Musically, Discröpsy offers a compelling blend of crust punk’s raw spirit and grindcore’s ferocity, with some elements of extreme metal. This helps the release not fall into the trap of many other crustgrind bands that only do Disrupt/Destroy!/ENT worship. The riffs are creative, engaging, raw and pulverizing, but most importantly—not repetitive. The guitarist showcases a vast range of vocal techniques, from deep growls to high-pitched shrieks, reminiscent of ENT’s dual vocal delivery, but impressively done by a single person. The drummer syncs perfectly with the glorious riff carnage, managing the occasional tempo changes seamlessly.

In summary, Discröpsy proves to be a splendid duo, demonstrating the strength and resilience of Brazil’s crust, grind, and mince scene. Their debut EP represents everything crustgrind stands for, from the militant messages and anti-systemic rage to the DIY musical approach, all executed in a fresh and inspired way. If you appreciate crust and grind bands like Rot, Expurgo, Agathocles, Disrupt, or Extreme Noise Terror, disappointment won’t be coming your way as Discröpsy are one of the most promising newer bands in this style not only in Brazil, but worldwide.
